EI-90 FACADE AT THE NEW JOAN XXIII HOSPITAL IN TARRAGONA: INNOVATION, TESTING AND ADVANCED SEALING
The new Joan XXIII University Hospital in Tarragona is one of the most significant healthcare projects currently under construction in Spain, with a floor area of nearly 80,000 m² and an investment of over 250 million euros.
For this project, mcr tecresa® is supplying 10,000 m² of 13 mm TECBOR® PYL F Boards, integrated into an industrialised façade system with high fire performance (EI-90).

REAL-WORLD TESTING OF THE SYSTEM: BEYOND REGULATIONS
One of the key aspects of the project has been the conduct of a specific test on the complete multi-layer façade system, including all its components and joints.
The test, carried out at an ENAC-accredited official laboratory, has validated the system’s actual performance, yielding a particularly noteworthy result:
- Project requirement: EI-60
- Result obtained: EI-90
- Result obtained: EI-90
Boost meets regulations and significantly enhances façade fire safety, a critical aspect for hospitals.
INDUSTRIALISED CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM
The project utilizes an industrialized modular façade solution, where each component plays a fundamental role in the system’s final performance.
Workshop phase
- Integration of the TECBOR® PYL F Borad into the modules
- Protection of joints between panels using TECLACK® G Paste, ensuring the system’s continuity
Construction phase
- Assembly of complete modules on the façade
- Resolution of module junctions
- Sealing of joints and specific point
It is precisely at this stage that the treatment of joints takes on a particular importance.
TECLACK® G: KEY TO THE CONTINUITY OF THE FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM
In industrialised systems, the joints between modules and the junctions with floor slabs are critical points, as any discontinuity can compromise fire performance.
To address these issues, TECLACK® G, has been used, a solution specifically developed to ensure the watertightness and continuity of the passive fire protection system.
TECLACK® G is a single-component, water-based intumescent coating, formulated for the passive fire protection of structures, and for sealing service penetrations and linear joints.
Function within the system
- Sealing between façade modules
- Sealing at junctions with floor slabs
Why is this so important?
The use of TECLACK® G enables:
- 🔥 Maintaining the integrity of the EI-90 system under real-world conditions
- 🔒 Preventing cracks or weak points in joints
- 🧱 Ensuring the continuity of passive protection
- ⚡ Adapting to movements of industrialized systems
Ultimately, it is not just about the panel, but how the junctions are resolved: a system is only as reliable as its weakest point, and TECLACK® G eliminates that risk.

The system is completed by theTECBOR® PYL F Board, a laminated plasterboard solution reinforced with glass fibres and fire-retardant additives.
- Classification A2-s1, d0
- High fire resistance
- Suitable for industrialized construction
- Versatility across multiple applications
Furthermore, tests have been carried out on VOC and formaldehyde emissions, meeting the increasingly demanding LEED certification requirements in the hospital and health sector.
RESULT: REAL SAFETY IN A CRITICAL ENVIRONMENT
The solution implemented at Joan XXIII Hospital enables:
- Exceeding regulatory requirements (EI-90 versus EI-60)
- Ensuring system continuity at all points, including junctions
- Reducing the risk of fire spreading along the façade
- Complying with environmental and health standards
