mcr tecresa\u00ae<\/strong>\u00a0R&D Department has been developing for years a product that completes our catalogue of passive fire protection products. Our\u00a0Teclack-W\u00ae<\/sup> Intumescent Paint<\/a><\/strong> is mainly used for the protection of metallic profiles. It reacts to fire in two different ways:<\/p>\n

– First, a chemical reaction takes place. The paint swells up (intumescence) and absorbs the heat, which is not transferred to the metallic profile.<\/p>\n

– Then, that volume expansion generates a kind of ash which covers the profiles and performs as an excellent thermal insulation that delays the reaching of its critical temperature.<\/p>\n

Due to its different behaviour regarding other \u201cnon-reactive\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cpassive\u201d<\/strong> materials to cover metallic structures, like mortars of fire-resistant boards, Teclack-W\u00ae is tested under a particular regulation: instead of the UNE EN 13381-4, which is used for mortars and boards (non-reactive products), our intumescent paint is tested under the UNE EN 13381-8: 2011 standard<\/strong>, Tests to determine the contribution to fire resistance of the structural elements. Part 8: Reactive<\/u> protection applied to steel elements. The differences between both standards are basically two:<\/p>\n

  1. As already mentioned, these products start the protection once the intumescence has begun, unlike the passive products, which applies thermal insulation from the very first minute. This means that there is a different evaluation system for the results in both cases.<\/li>\n
  2. The test standard for this type of reactive products obliges to test it on open profiles (IPN, IPE, HEB, etc), but also on closed profiles (circular or squared). The standard for passive products allows the test only on open profiles and a later correction factor for the closed ones.\n

    Composition and finish<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Another matter that is increasingly important is the type of solvent<\/strong> used in this type of products. The \u201c-W\u201d ending of our Teclack paint derives from the English\u00a0word \u201c<\/span>Water<\/strong>\u201d, since it is the solvent used in this case. This provides an ecological and environmentally sustainable advantage in relation to other solvents, since the Volatile Organic Compounds (<\/span>VOCs<\/strong>) emission to the atmosphere is reduced. This is regulated by law in closed spaces and limited to the construction of buildings with the proper sustainability certification, like <\/span>GREEN<\/strong>, <\/span>LEED<\/strong> or <\/span>BREEAM<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    This kind of intumescent paint usually requires a previous application base, an antioxidant primer<\/strong>. It is as much important as the application of the finish coat<\/strong> -for example, enamel-. This finish coat is essential to guarantee the durability of the product, since the intumescent paint is porous and absorbs the environmental humidity. This causes a rapid loss of its fire protection features if it is not applied, mainly in damp environments.<\/p>\n
