This only \u00a0occurs on high thickness elements and dense reinforcements coverings. Nowadays, constructive systems use the minimum sections according to the standard and, in some cases like tunnels, <strong>concrete must be protected in case of fire<\/strong> to avoid its breakdown.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Which regulation must be complied?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>There is not a mandatory compliance regulation in Spain<\/strong> regarding the tunnels protection. We can just find <strong>EU recommendations<\/strong> to use other countries\u2019 standards (France, Germany and Holland). It is the planner duty and decision to adapt the project to one of those fire protection regulations of structural elements (essentially, concrete), smoke evacuation systems, escaping routes, ets\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The problem is that thicknesses and reinforced coverings are complied according the CTE, but when a fire takes place inside a tunnel caused by combustible elements (vehicles with filled gas tanks, trucks with flammable cargo or combustible liquids\u2026) or by its own characteristics, the tunnel becomes a <strong>real oven<\/strong>. This causes that<strong> special measures<\/strong> are taken to protect the concrete. The ISO standard curve used in building construction is insufficient on tunnels. Other countries have suffered several tunnels accidents with many mortal victims and their temperature curves are stricter. In Germany, we find the <strong>RABT\/ZTV<\/strong>; in France, the <strong>HCM<\/strong>, derived from the hydrocarbon curve and modified to consider the higher fire loads in tunnels; in Holland, the <strong>Rigswaterstaat<\/strong> or <strong>RWS<\/strong>, based on a real test of a tank truck with 50.000 litres of combustible burning for two hours inside a tunnel. This curve is the one with higher temperature: <strong>1.350\u00ba C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21399 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mcrtecresa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/curva-RWS-300x166.jpg\" alt=\"RWS fire curve\" width=\"535\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mcrtecresa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/curva-RWS-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mcrtecresa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/curva-RWS-768x425.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mcrtecresa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/curva-RWS.jpg 795w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Spalling effect<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An special phenomenon takes place on concrete when it quickly rises its temperature: the <strong>SPALLING<\/strong> effect. This causes a chipping on the fire exposed side of the concrete, usually preceded by an explosion of splinters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At 400\u00ba C, the calcium hydroxide of the cement dehydrates and <strong>creates water steam<\/strong> according to the formula: Ca(OH)<sub>2 <\/sub>&#8211;&gt;\u00a0CaO + H<sub>2<\/sub>O.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This causes the break of chemical union links between the concrete molecules that makes it loses its resistance. Also, tiny water bubbles become steam on the exposed side and put pressure over the material, which explodes and throws pieces close to the chipping. At the same time, the reinforcement of the concrete remains exposed, which reduces even more it resistance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21402 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mcrtecresa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/spalling-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"Spalling\" width=\"553\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mcrtecresa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/spalling-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mcrtecresa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/spalling.jpg 559w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>mercor <span style=\"color: #e42313;\">tecresa<\/span><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/strong> R&amp;D department has been working for years to give solutions to this problem. Multiple solutions have been tested with <a href=\"https:\/\/mcrtecresa.com\/en\/tecbor-boards\/tunnel-protection\">Tecbor<strong><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/strong> Boards<\/a>, both in laboratories and in real tunnels, which guarantee the<strong> resistance of the concrete for more than two hours exposed to the fire<\/strong>. In most tests, we have used the <strong>RWS<\/strong> dutch fire curve, since it is the one with higher temperature and allows us to comply the rest of curves used in other countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the most used solutions is the one with<a href=\"https:\/\/mcrtecresa.com\/en\/tecbor-boards\/tunnel-protection#tecbor-23-rws-120-suspended-ceiling\"> Tecbor<strong><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/strong> Board 23 mm<\/a> to get <strong>two hours<\/strong> of fire resistance under <strong>RWS curve<\/strong>, directly settled on a concrete slab of 120 mm. That panel has been also tested on suspended ceiling with a result of <strong>180 minutes<\/strong> of fire resistance under the same RWS curve.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Paneles Tecbor\u00ae.
